The reason for this elegant and readable book is the antiquities which came to light during the construction works for the extension of Line 2 of the METRO. It describes the structures and objects which were discovered along the length of its route from Agios loannis station to Elliniko, which is today, I hope only temporarily, the southern terminal of the line. The extension of Line 2 coincides for much of its course with the present day Vouliagmenis Avenue which crosses the part of Attica which stretches along the western slopes of Hymettus, passing through the municipalities of Daphni, Agios Demetrios, Ilioupolis, Alimos, and Argyroupolis-Elliniko.This important arterial road which begins at Kallirhois Street, south of the columns of the temple of Olympian Zeus, and meets at Pygadakia in Voula the coastal road which leads east to Sounion, connecting Athens with the municipalities on the west coast of Attica.
